The past year has thrown a lot of new teachers onto the path of becoming reluctant virtual educators. By March 2020, thanks to COVID-19, 104,000 US brick-and-mortar schools had closed, leaving 47.9 million students and more than three million teachers thrown into the virtual school trenches, far too many without training or proper support.
After countless Zoom meetings organized through the online teaching Facebook support page, The Virtual Balcony, and within my school’s district, I found these reluctant virtual teachers faced tremendous hurdles, but they also saw the benefits that could come from teaching online, once they got the hang of it.
But teachers who are transitioning from brick-and-mortar to a virtual environment often struggle with the nuances of educating, engaging, and motivating online learners.
That’s why I wrote the book, SOS: Strategies for Online Survival. It’s a fast (and hopefully funny) read that offers a powerful message focusing on positivity, motivation, organization, time management, and best practices for being an effective online educator.
For more than two decades I’ve dedicated myself to teaching students in both the traditional and virtual setting. In that time I’ve discovered ways to motivate and mentor both educators and students. I understand the challenges that online educators face and have actionable tips and relatable examples that will immediately make readers feel more powerful and more prepared for online teaching.
